Your Next Place is not only about housing.
It is about creating a small community where people of different ages and backgrounds can support each other and feel at home.

Support.
Autonomy.
Everyone has their own home and their own rhythm of life.
This is not about shared housing or communal living.
The idea is simple:
people live independently, but within a small network where connection, trust and mutual support can naturally grow.
You can be on your own when you want to, and still know there are people around you.

Before Your Next Place, we had already been searching for ways to live differently. We saw how younger generations were increasingly priced out of the housing market, while older generations wanted to remain in their homes for as long as possible, often without the daily support they might eventually need. This growing gap made us question whether housing could be organised in a more mutual and sustainable way, while allowing everyone to keep their own home and independence.
Our journey started with the Greenhouse project in 2019, an ecological housing concept designed by Koen, focused on autonomy, sustainability and alternative ways of living. It became the first step in exploring how homes could be adapted not only to individual needs, but also to shared living arrangements between generations.
This idea became more tangible when we met Venke, a 71-year-young resident in Bulgaria who deeply values the place she lives in and wishes to remain there for as long as possible. Seeing her desire to continue living independently, while recognising that everyday support may become necessary over time, highlighted the potential of bringing generations together in a way that benefits both. It reinforced our belief that by connecting people who seek affordable living with those who want to stay in their homes longer, small-scale communities based on contribution, care and independence can naturally emerge.

We develop small-scale living environments where people can live independently, while being part of a supportive community. Each location consists of a limited number of independent and affordable housing units, designed for long-term rental and adapted to different living needs.

We identify suitable locations where small communities can be developed in a sustainable and future-oriented way, taking into account accessibility, infrastructure and long-term livability.

Together with ecological architect Koen Vandewalle, we design and build a limited number of independent and affordable housing units per location, in different sizes and configurations. Residents choose the unit that best fits their needs.

Each location includes one unit reserved for short stays, allowing future residents to experience the place and community before choosing to live there long-term.
The community builds on years of experience in ecological housing design and sustainable infrastructure.
Together with ecological architect Koen Vandewalle, we explore how small-scale living environments can support independence, affordability and long-term livability, across generations.

First community in Bulgaria

Your Next Place was started by Samia, who moved to the Balchik region in search of a simpler way of living, closer to nature and with more freedom.
Her journey here began when she started helping Venke, a Norwegian homeowner who wanted to remain in her home in Bulgaria for as long as possible. By looking after the house when Venke was away, Samia experienced first-hand how important it is for homeowners abroad to have someone reliable nearby.
Living in the region and seeing both sides, empty homes and people looking for a place to stay, inspired the creation of Your Next Place.
We are currently exploring our first small-scale shared living environment in Balchik, on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. This pilot location allows us to assess how independent housing units can support both long-term living and community interaction, while maintaining privacy, affordability and autonomy.
This pilot location will consist of a limited number of independent and affordable rental units, designed in different sizes to accommodate a variety of living needs, while allowing residents to live autonomously within a small community setting.

One unit will be reserved for short-term stays, allowing future residents to experience the location and daily rhythm of the community before deciding to live there long-term.

Each unit is designed with ecological building principles in mind, including responsible energy use and water autonomy, supporting long-term, independent living in a sustainable way.
